São Paulo – Rio

Rio de Janeiro surprised us from day one. Even though it is true that it is part of South America, Brazil is like its own continent with its own culture, language, customs and heritage. There is nothing in Brazil that reminded us of the Incan roots that we saw in the northerm part of South America or the European melting pot in Chile and Argentina. Brazil is a big country generalize so of course it is hard to generalize but based on our experience in Rio and Sao Paulo we perceived the immense power of the Brazilian economy, the unseen … Continue reading São Paulo – Rio

Buenos Aires & Montevideo

We arrived in Buenos Aires after an 11 hour bus ride from Cordoba. We planned the bus ride with a good amount of anticipation to ensure everything worked as desired considering the significant distance to be covered. However, as mentioned in previous posts, things in Argentina can often be complicated and unpredictable! We had reserved seats that recline 160 degrees in order to be more comfortable during the trip but when we were boarding the bus in the morning we discovered that, contrary to what we had been told and reserved at the same terminal, it only had regular seats. … Continue reading Buenos Aires & Montevideo

Cordoba

We went to the city of Cordoba because it is on the way to Buenos Aires but we did’t do much research about what to do or where to go in Cordoba before arriving. Cordoba is the second largest city in Argentina after Buenos Aires. It’s economy is driven by the local automobile industry and the nearby farming and argiculture. The topography of this region is very different from Mendoza, particularly in that Corsoba is entirely flat. We arrived early in the morning after a quick 1 hour flight from Mendoza and took advantage of our early arrival to explore … Continue reading Cordoba

Crossing the Andes and Mendoza

The Aconcagua rises 6,960 meters above sea level on the border between Chile and Argentina to be the highest peak on the South American continent. Getting a chance to see this majestic peak is one of the reasons we chose to cross from Chile to Argentina by bus. Once upon a time Henry dreamed about climbing the Aconcagua, that may never happen but at least we got to see her for several hours while we were crossing the border. We enjoined this bus ride like no other we have taken so far on this trip for many reasons. The bus … Continue reading Crossing the Andes and Mendoza

Valparaiso and Viña del Mar

We made it back to continental Chile! The flight was long but the plane and service in LAN were good. We have had several flights with LAN in the last two months and the only ones that they got right were the national flights to/from Isla de Pascua. We wanted to travel to Valparaiso and Viña to see the Chilean cost. Both places have been very important in Chile’s history. The first was the biggest port on the south pacific coast of South America for many years and the second has been a traditional posh place to enjoy the beauty … Continue reading Valparaiso and Viña del Mar

Easter Island

Going to one of the most remote inhabited places in the world has been fantastic. It feels like traveling into a chapter of “Treasure Island” or a favorite childhood adventure book. Getting to Easter Island is not as easy as getting to the Bahamas or the Caimans. However, there is no other place in the world like this magical island. The mysticism of this place is reflected in it’s natural beauty, location, people and of course it’s undiscovered history, missing traditions and the visible heritage, the Moai. We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon after a 5 hour flight from Santiago. … Continue reading Easter Island

Santiago

We arrived in Santiago after a long day of traveling from Cusco, Peru. Since we left Cali we have not been in a real city, so we were looking forward to being back in a big city. Santiago has not disappointed us. The city is well developed with amazing infrastructure and diverse activities for all interests. So far this is the best city we have seen in SA, and as and added bonus the weather great. It is hot and sunny with clear skies and minimal humidity, perfect! We were looking forward to this kind of weather after the wet … Continue reading Santiago

Cusco – Choquequirao – Machupichu

It has taken us a while to put this post together because Peru has kept us very busy discovering Cusco, finding a cellphone, hiking to Choquequirao and visiting Machupichu. Peru welcomed us with the kindness of its people. We have met several Serranos (Peruvians from the mountains) and all of them have been very helpful, genuine and pleasant to be around. Walking around Cusco we were also struck by the people. The Inca’s DNA can be seen on most of the people on the streets. Black hair and eyes with short stature and usually big smiles. Walking around town Henry … Continue reading Cusco – Choquequirao – Machupichu

Galapagos and more Galapagos

Hi guys, We are back after 6 days of ocean, sand, animals and sun! Galapagos lives up to everything you have probably heard about it. To begin with it is hot! It is located along the equator after all, so the sun is dangerous here at any time of day. We have seen several people walking around with severe sunburns. So, if you want to go to Galapagos make sure you bring a good amount of sunblock. We had to purchase some here and the price was far from fair. Galapagos is also beautiful in all aspects. The islands topographic … Continue reading Galapagos and more Galapagos

Quito and Galapagos first 48 hours

We decided to do this post because the last 48 hours have been very exiting and full of events and information. We used LAN Airlines to get here from Cali, with an overnight stop in Quito. The flights were on time but the aircrafts are not updated, just so you know. We arrived in Quito around 8:00pm and because the airport is far, far away from the city we decided to stay at a Hostal/Rancho, Hosteria San Carlos Tababela. This is a charming old ranch 15 minutes away from the airport. After a quick negotiation with the taxi driver we … Continue reading Quito and Galapagos first 48 hours
