Zanzibar – The door to Africa!

Zanzibar was our last destination in Africa and there we were able to recharged batteries while enjoying the beauty of this amazing Island. Zanzibar was for many centuries the last place African slaves saw before they were sent to America or Europe. Cultures from the east and west have been mixed in Zanzibar for centuries so it is possible to see Africans, Muslims, Christians, Hindus and many more living together in harmony. The architecture in Stonetown demonstrates the mix of cultures and races. From Middle East architecture to Classic Colonial European buildings. The food is also a fantastic representation of … Continue reading Zanzibar – The door to Africa!

Serengeti – Ngorongoro a dream come true! – Tanzania

All the pains of the previous days’ road trips were gone as soon as we arrived in Arusha. This is a big town that serves as a base for visiting several of the major sights and parks in Tanzania including Mt. Kilimanjaro, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and many more. The flight to Arusha was very good because we got to see the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro breaking through the clouds as well as the vast plains below during the descent. Soon after we had gotten settled in at our hostal, which a bit outside of Arusha, we went … Continue reading Serengeti – Ngorongoro a dream come true! – Tanzania

Looking back now we can laught… – Getting to Dar

Getting into Tanzania and to Dar es Salam has been the most challenging task in Africa. The planned route was Nkhata Bay- Mzuzu-Karonga-border crossing in Songwe-Mbeya, the closest Tanzanian “city” after the border. Estimated time: 10 hours. The plan changed very fast! We took a 7am minibus from Nkhata to Mzuzu and on our arrival to Mzuzu we were approached by a South African guy, Philip, that offered us a ride to Mbeya in his nice Jeep Grand Cherokee if we helped him with some money for the gas. After checking his passport and SA ID we accepted the deal … Continue reading Looking back now we can laught… – Getting to Dar

Malawi, The best fresh water diving in Africa

To make our way to Malawi we took the 5am Green Bus from Mfuwe to Chipata (Zambia). In Chipata we took a taxi to the border to go through the immigration process. Malawi does not required a visa for Americans so the process was simple and free. Hurrah! While we were going through the process we started to talk with two young volunteers from the Netherlands that were crossing the boarder at the same time. They happen to have a car taking them to Lilongwe, so we asked for a ride. They took us all the way to the capital … Continue reading Malawi, The best fresh water diving in Africa

Zambia, hidden gem!

We crossed the border into Zambia by walking over the bridge that hangs above the falls looking down at the Melting Pot. The views from the bridge are very cool with Zimbabwe to the left and Zambia to the right. There is a bungi jumping facility underneath the bridge platform, for people looking for a serious adrenaline rush. We passed the border without any issues. We tought, read and heard that sometimes the over land border crossings in Africa could be difficult but thankfully we have not had any issues. At each border crossing we have been very welcomed. Let’s … Continue reading Zambia, hidden gem!

Zimbabwe – A country in recovery! – Amazing Victoria falls

We came to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, to see our first real African city. We have passed several small towns on our journey to Harare but this is the first actual city we have visited in Africa apart from the ones in South Africa, which are very different. As usual first impressions count and Harare provided its own. The mayority of the city consists of lowrise constructions. From one to three floors. However, there are some big, tall and modern buildings that define the downtown area. The tallest building is the central bank of Zimbabwe which we gather rises … Continue reading Zimbabwe – A country in recovery! – Amazing Victoria falls

Untouched Paradise – Vilanculo – Mozambique

Mozambique, why bother? You must bother because the water is blue like the sky, the people smile and say hello at you in the street, the seafood is amazing and Bazaruto is a natural paradise worth seeing. True, it is not easy to get around, there isn’t reliable internet and you need to be carefull at night. However, it is a fantastic, unexplored and undeveloped location. We came to Vilankulo looking for the a whale shark, but due to extremely high prices for diving, and only a moderate probability of seeing one, we decided to pass on this goal until … Continue reading Untouched Paradise – Vilanculo – Mozambique

Amazing South Africa!

South Africa has been a fantastic surprise for us. After three months on the road this is the first time that we are not in a country were we speak the native language. In addition this is the first place where we cannot blend in with the locals at times. We arrived in Cape Town after a long flight from Brazil. Our dear friend Belinda Northcott was waithing for us at the airport. It has been 4 years since we said goodbye to Bella in Boston so we were very exited to see each other. From the airport we went … Continue reading Amazing South Africa!
