Crossing the U.S.

One of the big lessons we learned from traveling around the world is that we finally comprehend the magnitude of its size. Maps do not do any justice to the scale of how small we are and how little we know or can know about this planet, its cultures and people. It is just bigger than us! The US is a big country and everyone knows that but when we had the chance to drive from its southern pacific coast to the middle of Texas our perceptions changed very fast. The extensiveness and beauty of this land is quite something … Continue reading Crossing the U.S.

Southern California

We visited California for several reasons. First, we were scouting San Diego as a potential place to live. Second, Henry had never been to the west coast so we wanted to take the opportunity to see what is going on in this part of the US. Finally, Claudia’s parents and Grandmother flew from Boston and Ohio to say hello and have some days off from the cold northeast winter. San Diego delivered from day one. The weather in this city is probably the best in the continental US. It is sunny and warm with soft winds that make life outdoors … Continue reading Southern California

Hawaii

Hawaii is going to be a short entry because it is very easy to recap our time in the Islands. First let’s say that Oahu is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Yes, we were told that the other islands are much more beautiful than Oahu, but for us this is not a competition, it is a matter of personal perspectives and experiences. Oahu’s nature and landscape are beautiful; the laid-back culture and approach towards life is contagious; finally, the city is well developed so we felt comfortable arriving there. In addition to the points mentioned above, we … Continue reading Hawaii

New Zealand

We landed in Wellington under torrential rains and cold winds. Where is the summer in NZ? We struggled to find it during our time there, but that did not put us off immediately. We rented a car and got our tent ready to camp along the road on our way to Auckland (10 Days). Our friend Michelle (who we met in the Serengeti few months back) threw us a welcome party and gave us a warm bed to spend our first night in NZ. Wellington is a small city with many charming houses on the hills near the harbor.  Its … Continue reading New Zealand

Australia, what a continent!

We landed in Melbourne after a late flight from Bali. We got our inflatable mattresses out and camped in the airport until the sun came out. In the morning we took a van to our first destination in this big continent. We arrived in Geelong around 9am where our Colombian friend Juan Guillermo Saavedra picked us up to show us around this beautiful part of the world. Did we mention that Juan and his wife Yin had just had a baby a few days before our arrival? It was very generous of them to welcome us in their home considering … Continue reading Australia, what a continent!

Bali, a taste of Indonesia

We visited Indonesia (Bali) after leaving Cambodia back in November but it is just now in December while we are in NZ, that we are having an opportunity to sit down and do some writing. Indonesia was not part of our original travel plans. We were thinking of visiting Malaysia instead, but we were sold on the idea of visiting Indonesia by our friend Marine Thomas. We also need it some down time to recharged batteries after touring South East Asia and the cost of traveling in Bali sounded very attractive to us at this point of the trip. We … Continue reading Bali, a taste of Indonesia

Last months overseas: Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Southern California

Our sincere apologies to our readers for the untimely updates on the past months. We are in the west coast writing these posts (San Diego, CA). We arrived here two weeks ago after visiting Bali, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. The reason behind our tardiness in sharing these posts is probably the lack of enthusiasms towards facing the reality of coming back, finishing our trip and getting back to reality. Indonesia (Bali) – from Nov 15 to the 28. Australia (Melbourne, Geelong, Sidney) – from Nov 29 to Dec 9. New Zealand (North Island from Wellington to Auckland) – from … Continue reading Last months overseas: Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Southern California

Cambodia

We flew from Bangkok to Siem Reap on a morning that was hot in both cities. It is now summer in SEA and it is getting very hot. Arriving in Siem Reap from BK was a refreshing experience. Cambodia is simple, basic, hot, humid, dusty and flavorfull, an oasis in comparison to the urban picture of BK. We were welcomed at the airport by our soon to be official driver for the trip in Siem Reap. The traditional Tuk-Tuk in SR differs from many other versions we have experienced in Asia. Here the TT is a motorcycle pulling a wood … Continue reading Cambodia

Thailand! The vacation within the vacation

We had a great time in Thailand from north to south a beautiful country. It is much more developed than expected and the tourism industry has explored without much structure or legislation so it is a little crazy. We took a good amount of time to catchup with some reading so we are behind with the written entry of this post. Hopefully we can get to do it soon. In the mean time here are the pictures After 22 days of traveling through Thailand, we can say that we have a very good idea about what is going on in … Continue reading Thailand! The Buddhist experience Lao

It is hard to see and experience the beautifull places and cultures that this world has to offer while current society encounters so many challenges in other places. We felt for all the people in the Middle East that have lost everything, including their lives, to the nonsensical religious war and for all the casualties in Africa and now in other countries from the Ebola outbreak that seems to be far from controlled or contained. It seems that the more time we have to see new things while we are traveling, the more time we also have to learn and … Continue reading The Buddhist experience Lao
